What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline of being present inside the answers generative engines give — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overview. The same field is also called AEO (Answer Engine Optimization), LLM SEO and AI visibility; all four ask one question: when a user asks an AI, whose name appears in the answer, and which sources is that answer built from?

How is GEO different from SEO?

SEO targets a position among ten blue links and measures success in clicks. GEO targets presence inside the single answer the engine writes, where the user often clicks nothing at all — so a click stops being the measure of success.

The unit of measurement changes too. In SEO the unit is a rank for a keyword; in GEO the unit is an individual answer: one question was put to one engine, and the brand was either named or it was not. That binary outcome is countable, which makes GEO more directly measurable than rank forecasting.

Research published at KDD 2024 reports that adding statistics, quotations and cited sources to content materially raises visibility in generative engines. Classic keyword-density tactics measured as ineffective on this surface in the same study.

Why does AI visibility matter now?

Search behaviour is shifting to answers delivered on the page: SparkToro and Similarweb's 2026 analysis finds that more than two thirds of Google searches end without sending a click to any site. When a user takes the answer directly, a brand absent from that answer receives no visit and no click at all.

The Turkish market has not yet settled on a name for this surface. In our own measurements, firms serving this category mostly go unnamed in answers to Turkish category questions, and the category label itself (GEO, AEO, LLM SEO) is not used consistently across engines.

How is AI visibility measured?

Measurement starts with a registered set of questions: the questions real buyers ask, written without naming the brand. A question that names the brand already guarantees the brand appears in the answer, so it is not evidence of visibility — that distinction is the most basic rule of the method.

Every question goes to every engine and every answer is recorded individually. Whether the brand was named is resolved against namesake confusion — a name like 'GoPeople' pointing at both our HR product and an Australian courier company is the most common way a measurement breaks silently.

A cell we could not measure is never counted as a zero. A question that hit a provider error leaves the denominator and is disclosed separately; when 'we measured and found nothing' and 'we could not measure' become the same number, the report claims a certainty it does not have.

We measured our own product: 116 answers, 0 mentions

GoPersona measured its own visibility with its own instrument and publishes the result unchanged. The run was planned as 130 cells across 5 engines; in the 116 measurable spontaneous answers, the product was never named.

Sibling products measured the same day came out differently: our digital signage product was named in 6 of 97 answers (6.2%), our HR assistant in 1 of 84. These numbers are not a grade; they are the comparison line for the next measurement.

Frequently asked questions

What is GEO?

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is the discipline of being present inside the answers generative AI engines give — ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude and Google AI Overview. The same field is also called AEO, LLM SEO and AI visibility.

Are GEO and AEO the same thing?

GEO and AEO are two names for the same discipline in practice: both target presence inside the answer an engine generates. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) emphasises answer engines, GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) emphasises generative ones; the measurement method and the interventions are the same.

How is AI visibility measured?

Registered questions that do not name the brand are put to every engine, every answer is recorded individually, and whether the brand was named is resolved against namesake confusion. Observations that could not be measured leave the denominator and are disclosed; they are never counted as zeros.

What is GoPersona and whose product is it?

GoPersona is the AI visibility analytics product of GOTONOM Yazılım Teknolojileri A.Ş., based in Istanbul. Its only official address is gopersona.app; it is unrelated to the US sales tool 'Personas' at gopersonas.com.

Does GoPersona measure its own visibility?

Yes. In the measurement of 27 August 2026, 130 observations were planned across 5 engines; in the 116 measurable spontaneous answers GoPersona was never named, and the result was published unchanged. In the same measurement 93.1% of answers carried at least one source.
